Description

About Shorea Wood and Linseed Oil
Shorea is possibly the best wood choice for outdoor furniture. Related to Burma teak, this hardwood grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries. Because shorea is dense, heavy, and hard, and contains an abundance of natural oils, it is highly resistant to rot, bug infestation, weather, and marring. Shorea (red lauan) wood will have variations is color - from a red to a yellow cast.

 

The Shorea wood for this item is treated with linseed oil. Linseed oil is not a varnish. The oil soaks into the pores of the wood leaving a shiny (not glossy) surface that shows off the grain of the wood. Linseed oil helps protects the wood from denting by compression and from accelerated deterioration.

 

After assembly simply wipe the bench with a damp cloth to remove any excess oil that may be remaining. Please note that it is recommended to let your bench sit outside for 2-3 days before sitting on it to let the stain air out and completely dry.

I use this bench on my front porch. I wanted something practical yet attractive, simple, not too flashy, not too expensive, and that I could use on a daily basis. This bench fits the bill. It came in four pre-assembled pieces (left side, right side, back, and seat), which were very quickly and easily put together with the tool and hardware provided with the bench. I can't say how it is going to hold up over time, since I've only had it for a few weeks now, but it seems sturdy and I believe that it's well worth the price. I would definitely recommend this product to friends and family. I might even purchase another one for my back patio.

This is a high quality, very beautiful bench for a great price, and it was designed to assemble well - but...and this was a big hassle....the pieces didn't fit together. I had to use a dremmel tool to sand down the mortise & tenon connection on one spot. The wood is very hard, which made this tough to do. Sandpapaper and chipping it manually didn't work. It would have taken 20 minutes to assemble and place- instead, it took an hour. But, if you're a handy person with the right tools, I highly recommend this. I may buy another one because you can't beat the price [...], and I know what I'm getting into. One more downside: it was 25% covered in mold...it came off, but...not so nice to deal with. One more upside: [...] I was shocked! All in all, I would buy it again and am happy with my purchase.

    I use this bench at the entry way to my condo at the front door. Heavy/sturdy enough.
    Product mostly good. Delivery was incredibly fast - 2 days - HOWEVER, it arrived in a patched box, and it was apparently dropped far enough to break three screws that held one of the slats on the seat, which fell off upon opening the box. I bought new screws and used epoxy glue and it shows no problem from this. Two or three vertical slats on the back are not as darkly colored, appearing to have not been stained well, or different wood was used. The color is supposed to be natural so this makes me wonder about the Chinese manufacturing honesty! Nevertheless, I LIKE THE BENCH AND THE PRICE. I would not accept these issues if I had paid more.

      I ordered this bench as a Mother's Day gift, and my mom loves it! The finish is beautiful and it is a very strong, sturdy piece. Assembly was also very easy - four parts total and all the tools/hardware were included. The finish isn't completely uniform throughout, but I think that adds to the beauty/natural feel of this bench and my mom likes that look too. Overall a very nice piece at a great price and speedy delivery too!

      Thanks to others for their great reviews telling their experience. I bought because of them. The delivery was almost unblievably fast. I ordered early Tues AM and received Thursday at my condo door. Delivery man brought on elevator to 6th floor. Unfortunately somewhere along the line the box was dropped and it caused two screws to break and one to fall out, thus causing the slat that bore the brunt of the drop to fall off. No problem fixing with epoxy and new stainless steel screws. A testimonial to the strength of the wood however! No damage. Just a ding on the edge that can be sanded. It's a beautiful bench and creates a lovely entrance at my condo door, along with my plants. Makes condo more homey. I just worry about when I can sit without fear of ruboff of the redish color onto my clothes. Dusting shows color. Time will tell. I wish I knew whether boiled or raw linseed oil was best for this wood.
