It does not look cheap nor feel cheap. The bench is higher in height than the typical benches, so be aware if little children are going to sit on this piece. It looks nice from a distance. However, once you get up close, you notice all the small defects and scratches in the wood and finish. One of the magnets that holds the door closed was installed in the wrong place by the manufacturer, so we had to fix that ourselves so that the door would stay closed. Although the hinges are aligned well enough to allow the doors to close smoothly, they are not aligned with one another, creating an asymmetrical appearance. I am a short woman, so the bench seems a bit high for my liking, but my husband is satisfied with the height. The color is more of a dark brown/walnut, rather than a true espresso. Even with all of our complaints, we will be keeping this unit because it seems like too much of a hassle to send it back after spending almost 2 hours between the two of us assembling it. Also, it was one of the only benches that was 36" long with a decent amount of storage space. Since we are using it as a shoe rack in our hallway, it should do the trick.

    My bench arrived as promised and was easy for my husband to assemble:) It is the perfect size for the end of our bed and still allows us to have a small set of steps for our dogs to get on the bed. The bench serves a dual purpose as a place to sit and put our shoes on and as a way for our dogs to jump down without hurting themselves. The finish is very attractive and it is great value for the money.

      I recently purchased this item and the "wood" was scratched and on one side of the bench the compressed wood had no finish which makes it look like someone had owned it for years and didn't care for it. I am definitely returning it. If you are going to put it in a mudroom or somewhere it is not going to be on display it is not a bad item. It had plenty of storage room and is sturdy. I just wouldn't use it in your hallway which is why I purchased it.

      The storage compartment below the bench is a good height for inserting a plastic bin which I use for storing cash returnable plastic bottles/cans. I have a recycable trash receptacle for non refundable items in the kitchen but wanted something for the refundable items! This is perfect!!!
